THERMAL INKJET EXPLAINED

What is TIJ printing, and which applications suit it?

Thermal Inkjet (TIJ) uses heat to form vapour bubbles that eject ink droplets from the printhead. Cartridge-based systems suit clear text and codes where printhead clearance and product movement can be kept consistent.

SMEs and factories can assess TIJ for cartons, labels, pouches and films, with ink matched to the material and testing at actual operating speed.

APPLICATIONS

Start with your product

Material and product handling are the starting points for TIJ selection.

Cartons and labels

For food, consumer goods and packing operations. Check whether the paper is absorbent or coated before selecting ink.

Pouches, films and plastics

Test drying time, adhesion and rub resistance for the specific film and coating.

Barcodes and QR codes

For product identification and lot tracking. Check code dimensions and quiet zones, then test with the actual reading equipment.

Four factors for the right selection

01

Material and ink

Send actual samples, including coatings and moisture conditions.

02

Clearance and conveyor

Check movement, mounting space and printhead position.

03

Speed and code

Specify products per minute, line count and message or code dimensions.

04

Cost and maintenance

Assess ink consumption for the actual job, idle periods and cartridge care.

Connect coding to your factory systems

Better Code assesses TIJ integration with conveyors, sensors and control systems, including software data input through supported interfaces. Vision inspection or code readers can be assessed for post-print checks within the project scope.

ANSWERS BEFORE INVESTMENT

Questions before buying a TIJ printer

Should I use TIJ for date coding on cartons and pouches?

For cartons, labels, pouches and films, consider TIJ models such as FASTJET F3511 or F3541. Selection depends on print area, message or code, number of positions and mounting space. For continuous lines or bottle coding, CIJ date coding may be more suitable. Send samples to Better Code for testing before confirming a model.

Can TIJ print on cartons, films and plastics?

TIJ can be considered when suitable ink is available, but not every plastic is compatible. Test drying time, adhesion and rub resistance on the actual substrate.

Should I choose FASTJET F3511 or F3541?

Start with the print area, message or code, number of print positions and mounting space. Better Code can assess samples and confirm the model and printhead configuration before purchase.

How does TIJ differ from CIJ?

TIJ uses ink cartridges, while CIJ uses a continuous inkjet system. Selection depends on material, clearance, speed, data format and operating pattern. If printhead distance is difficult to control, compare both technologies at the actual site.

Can 600 DPI be used at every speed?

Print speed depends on DPI and application conditions. The maximum speed is not available at every setting. Test the actual message or code at your production speed.

Will printed QR codes be readable?

The printer supports QR code formats, but actual scanning must be tested. Results depend on code size, data quantity, clarity, background colour, printing distance and the reader used.

How should I maintain TIJ printers and cartridges?

Follow the model and ink instructions. Check the printhead before production, and store or cap cartridges as recommended during idle periods to maintain print quality.

Does it support Thai text?

Yes. It supports Thai menus and text printing, including characters, vowels and tone marks, for setting up product and packaging messages.

How much does a TIJ printer cost, and what information is needed?

Pricing depends on the model, head count, ink, brackets, sensors and integration. Send product photos, material type, message or code, line speed and installation photos for an application-specific quotation.
