What Is a LOT Number? Reading and Creating Batch Codes

A LOT number identifies a defined production group. When connected to production records, it helps trace affected raw materials, processes and deliveries if a quality problem occurs.

What Is a LOT Number? Reading and Creating Batch Codes

LOT and batch definitions

Many factories use LOT and batch interchangeably; others distinguish a mixing batch from a packing lot. Define your terminology in the quality system so operators and customers interpret it consistently.

Create a clear internal structure

A lot code may include a product or site reference, production date, line, shift and sequence. There is no single universal format for every factory. The code must be unique enough for the intended records and understandable to authorised staff.

Connect the code to records

Link incoming raw materials, production runs, quality checks, finished goods and deliveries. A printed number alone cannot establish traceability. Decide who records each link and how it can be retrieved.

Control changes during production

Use approved templates and supported automatic date, shift or sequence functions where appropriate. Restrict editing, approve the first print and check again at changeover. Verify that the selected printer supports the intended format.

Printing and scanning

Choose CIJ, TIJ or laser from the material, message and speed. If the lot is encoded in a GS1 symbol, follow the relevant Application Identifier and data-format rules. Human-readable text and correctly structured encoded data are separate requirements.

Check applicable requirements

Legal and customer requirements differ by product and market. Confirm the applicable rules instead of assuming a single lot format or obligation covers every product.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lot number an expiry date?

No. It identifies a production group, although the record behind it may include dates.

Can a lot number help target a recall?

It can support identifying affected goods when it is reliably linked to complete production and distribution records.
