Choosing Date Coding Ink for Food Packaging

Distinguish ink used on food packaging from edible ink printed directly on food. The intended contact conditions, material and destination market determine which formulation and supporting documents are needed.

Choosing Date Coding Ink for Food Packaging

Where will the ink be applied?

Identify whether printing is on the outside of packaging, at a point that may contact food, or directly on the food. These are different applications. Do not use general industrial ink for direct printing on food.

Do not rely on the phrase ‘food grade’ alone

Ask the ink manufacturer to define the intended application and limitations. An ink described for food packaging is not automatically an edible ink. Suitability must cover the specific package and process.

Request the relevant documents

Ask for the safety data sheet, intended-use statement, formulation or compliance information appropriate to the application, printer compatibility, storage conditions and expiry information. A safety data sheet alone is not proof of suitability for every food-contact use.

Test the real production conditions

Check drying, adhesion and readability on the actual material. Consider condensation, rubbing, temperature and subsequent processing. A code must remain legible without assuming that one successful surface test covers all packaging.

Consider the destination market

Requirements differ between markets. Tell the supplier where the product will be sold and have the responsible food-compliance specialist assess the applicable requirements and documentation. This guide is a procurement checklist, not approval of a particular ink.

Compare alternatives where useful

Suitable laser marking can remove ink from the coding process, but material compatibility and packaging integrity still require assessment. Better Code can help evaluate CIJ ink options and sample tests for the defined application.

Frequently asked questions

Is food-packaging ink the same as edible ink?

No. Confirm the exact intended use with the manufacturer; the terms should not be treated as interchangeable.

Can I select ink from the package material alone?

No. Also consider contact conditions, process, printer compatibility, market requirements and actual sample results.
