BBE Meaning: Best Before End vs EXP vs BBF on Food Labels

BBE stands for Best Before End. It shows the period during which a food keeps its best quality; it is not an expiry date and not a production date. The Codex food labelling standard uses “Best before” when the day is given and “Best before end” when only the month and year are given, so BBE 10/2027 means best before the end of October 2027. After the BBE date, a food may still be eaten if it was stored correctly and its appearance, smell, colour and taste have not changed. EXP (expiry date) means the food should not be eaten after that date, and MFG is the manufacturing date. Food sold in Thailand must use the Thai wording for “best before” (ควรบริโภคก่อน) or “expiry” (หมดอายุ) under Thai FDA label rules.
What does BBE mean?
BBE stands for Best Before End. “End” refers to the end of the month or year printed after it, so BBE 10/2027 means best before the end of October 2027. The date is the manufacturer’s quality promise, covering taste, aroma, crispness or texture, provided the food is stored as the label says.
The Codex General Standard for the Labelling of Prepackaged Foods (CXS 1-1985) uses “Best before” when the day is indicated and “Best before end” in other cases, such as month and year only. That is why BBE is usually followed by a month and year, while BB or BBF usually carries a full date.
BBE vs BB, BBF, EXP and MFG

| Code | Stands for | Meaning | After the date |
|---|---|---|---|
| MFG / MFD | Manufacturing date / Manufactured | Date made | Not an expiry date; used with a best-before or expiry date |
| BB / BBF | Best Before | Best before (usually a full date) | May still be eaten if stored correctly and unchanged |
| BBE | Best Before End | Best before the end of the stated month or year | May still be eaten if stored correctly and unchanged |
| EXP / EXD | Expiry Date | Expiry date | Do not eat |
| Use by | Use by | Use by (for safety-related foods) | Do not eat |
See EXP Meaning for expiry dates and Label Date Abbreviations for other codes.
Does BB mean production date or expiry date?
Neither. BB stands for Best Before, a quality date. Production dates use MFG or MFD, and expiry dates use EXP. If a label shows both MFG and BB, read MFG as the date made and BB as the best-before date.
What date is BBE 10/2027? How to read BBE on labels

| On the label | Read as |
|---|---|
| BBE 10/2027 | Best before the end of October 2027 (up to 31 Oct 2027) |
| BBE DEC 2027 | Best before the end of December 2027 |
| BB 15/10/2027 | Best before 15 October 2027, when the label uses day/month/year |
| EXP 15/10/2027 | Expires on 15 October 2027; do not eat after this date |
Some countries use month/day/year. If a date such as 05/10/2027 is ambiguous, look for the order stated on the label. Under Thai FDA rules, manufacturers must state the order when it is not day, month, year.
Reading MFG and BBE together

Many products print both, for example MFG 10/2026 · BBE 10/2027: made in October 2026 and best before the end of October 2027. The gap between them is the shelf life the manufacturer sets from product testing, packaging and storage conditions.
Some labels say “Best before 3 years from the date of MFG”, meaning count three years from the printed manufacturing date: MFG 10/2026 is best before 10/2029. For food sold in Thailand, check the Thai FDA rules, which require the words for “best before” or “expiry” with a date. See also MFG, EXP and Best Before.
Can you eat food after the BBE date?
The Thai FDA explains that a “best before” date (BB / BBE) marks the period of best quality. After it, food may still be eaten if stored as directed and its appearance, smell, colour and taste are unchanged. Do not eat food from swollen or leaking packs, or with an unusual smell or colour. Foods marked with an expiry date (EXP) and highly perishable foods, such as pasteurised milk or juice, should not be consumed after the expiry date.
For manufacturers: BBE or EXP, and how to print it correctly
- Choose the right wording. Use “best before” for foods whose quality declines slowly without a safety risk after the date; use “expiry” where there is a risk after the date. The manufacturer sets shelf life from test results.
- Follow the Thai FDA label rules (Ministry of Public Health Notification No. 450, B.E. 2567 (2024)): use the Thai words for “best before” or “expiry”, with English allowed alongside. Foods with a shelf life of 90 days or less show day, month and year; longer shelf lives may show month and year, which matches the BBE format.
- State the date order and position. If the order is not day, month, year, state it; if the date is not next to the wording, say where it is printed. See where to print expiry dates.
- Let the printer calculate the date. Many industrial date coders can add shelf life to the production date automatically and print MFG, BBE and the lot number in one pass. Check the function on the model you use.
- Verify codes in-line. Use date code inspection cameras (OCR) to compare printed dates with the batch data and stop wrong or unreadable codes.
Choose the technology by packaging surface: CIJ for bottles, cans and film · TIJ for cartons and labels · laser for permanent ink-free codes · S510 handheld printer for small SME lots. Inks must suit food packaging; see choosing date coding ink for food packaging.
Summary
BBE stands for Best Before End: best before the end of the stated month or year. It is a quality date, not an expiry date or a production date. BBE 10/2027 means best before the end of October 2027; after it, food may still be eaten if stored correctly and unchanged, whereas EXP means do not eat after the date. Manufacturers should choose the right wording, follow Thai FDA rules and use printers that calculate dates automatically to avoid errors.
Frequently asked questions about BBE

Is BBE an expiry date?
No. BBE is a best-before date showing the period of best quality. Expiry dates use EXP, meaning the food should not be eaten after that date.
What is the difference between BBE and EXP?
BBE is about quality: food may still be eaten after it if stored correctly and unchanged. EXP is about safety: do not eat after the expiry date.
What is the difference between BBE and BBF?
They mean the same kind of date. Under the Codex standard, “Best before” is used with a full date and “Best before end” with only a month or year.
What do MFG and BBE mean on a label?
