Laser Date Coding on PET Bottles and Cans: Choosing a Model

Laser coding offers an ink-free approach to date and lot marking, but the wavelength and settings must match the actual packaging. A bottle or can name alone is not enough to select a laser.

Laser Date Coding on PET Bottles and Cans: Choosing a Model

Compare the CO₂ wavelengths

The FASTJET F7100C family includes 40W models with different wavelengths. The F7143C uses 9.3 µm and is identified in the product material for beverage-bottle applications. Other F7100C wavelengths should be assessed against their intended substrates and actual samples.

Test the complete package

PET formulation, colour, wall thickness and coating can change the mark. For cans, confirm whether the target is coated or exposed metal. Evaluate contrast, readability and material integrity after marking, rather than selecting solely by wattage.

Consider UV or fiber where appropriate

Different laser technologies interact differently with materials. UV and fiber options should be evaluated against the specific metal, plastic or coating and required mark. Results from one surface should not be generalised to another.

Define speed and code content

Provide the longest text, date format, barcode or QR data, marking area, product spacing and line speed. Check readability and position at production speed, then inspect the marked package after downstream handling.

Plan the whole installation

Laser integration includes mounting, product control and the appropriate protective arrangement for the application. Agree the equipment, trial scope and installation conditions in the quotation. Contact Better Code to arrange sample assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Can PET bottles be laser marked?

Yes, suitable PET bottles can be marked, but wavelength, formulation, colour and settings must be tested.

Does ink-free mean there are no application limits?

No. Mark contrast, packaging integrity, speed and installation still require assessment.
